A Broken Shower Valve Is Common In Older Showers
Do you need your shower valve replaced or repaired? Honestly, most homeowners don't know the signs that a shower valve needs replacing. Unfortunately, when a shower valve breaks it's usually at the most inopportune times. You may get up in the morning and start enjoying your morning shower only to have it go cold. For some, they suspect the hot water heater but don't be fooled, your shower valve probably needs replacing. Another sign of a worn valve is a grinding sound when you turn the handle. For some, the water may be trickling out or not coming out at all. If the water stops coming out all together, your valve needs replacing. A broken shower valve is common in older showers, you can expect one to last 15 to 20 years.
Common Signs Your Shower Valve Is Bad
Changing a shower valve is usually reserved for a plumbing specialist. But an above-average do-it-yourselfer (DIY) is capable of replacing one themselves. You'll need to know your valves; for example, for most modern temperature control valves they're either a diverter valve or a cartridge valve. Cartridge valve assemblies use holes to regulate the flow of hot and cold water. There are a couple of common signs to know if your valve is bad. The most common is dripping or running water when you turn the shower off. Another sign is your handle becomes difficult to turn and will worsen over time. When the cartridge wears out, your shower valve will need replacing. Another option may be replacing the rubber rings around because the rings are susceptible to breaking, corrosion, and dry-rot.
Mineral Deposits Are Another Common Problem
Another notable problem with either valve is mineral deposits that build up over a long period of time in and on the valve. California is notorious for hard water. If repair is an option then the mineral deposit needs removing before it is put back into place. Keep in mind, while repairing the shower may be an option, the valve will last 15 to 20 years so replacing it may be the best choice.
